Trauma therapy is built upon a foundation of safety and resource identification. The process continues by treating the earliest remembered traumas with Eye Movement Desensitizing and Reprocessing (EMDR)Therapy, working through to the most recent incidents. As patients heal from old wounds and points of view, sessions incorporate Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) with greater success. CBT enables patients to consolidate healing gained in EMDR, and improves adaptation to daily life and relationships. Because trauma work brings up the state of feelings that people experienced at the time of the original incident, it is best to begin when life circumstances are relatively stable. Since trauma work is not in itself substance abuse counseling, attention to sobriety is also advised before launching the journey.

Traumatized individuals often have the sense that their innate human potential has never been realized. After healing from trauma, patients step toward the future with vocational counseling. In the final stage of the journey a new self emerges. Aspirations and abilities that were hidden to the person until now appear. A light emerges from the darkness. The person is free to share their gifts and talents with their world.
